CHIA—AZTEC SUPERFOOD
Last year we had Chia plants for sale. The best time to grow Chia is from early spring as they require a long growing season. Once the plant reaches maturity the seeds can be harvested and eaten in a variety of ways.
We now have the seeds for sale in 250g bags. Some of the seed can be saved for growing later in the year.
I have been mixing the seed with warm water (about 1:9) and waiting for about 10—15 minutes. The water becomes gelatinous and it is easy to drink/chew the cupful. Prepared this way they can be added to smoothies or vegetable juice. We have been making smoothies with banana, Spirulina, Whey Powder, raw eggs, milk and the Chia once it has been soaked for 10 minutes.
It is delicious with the addition of a teaspoon of Maple Syrup and yoghurt. There is a lot of good information and serving suggestions on the internet, and the nutritional properties are amazing:
Nutritional information & Properties:
Chia seeds (Salvia hispanica L.) contain oil amounts varying between 32-39%, with the oil offering the highest known natural percentage of alpha-linolenic fatty acid (60-63%). Alpha-linolenic acid is an essential fatty acid acting in the human body as a substratum for the transformation into EPA and DHA through the action of desaturation and elongation enzymes. These seeds also contain some omega-6 essential fatty acids and exhibit a favourable omega-3 to omega-6 ratio of 3:2. Modern diets contain too few omega-3 fatty acids. The seeds possess 19-23% protein and the amino acids of Chia protein have no limiting factors in the adult diet (i.e., they are a complete protein source having all of the essential amino acids in an appropriate balance). Chia seeds are also a good source of B vitamins, phosphorus, calcium, zinc, potassium, boron, and copper. They also have demonstrated strong antioxidant activity. The most important antioxidants they provide are caffeic acid, chlorogenic acid and flavanol glycosides. Since oxidation is significantly delayed, Chia has great potential within the food industry when compared to other alpha-linolenic acid sources, such as flax seeds, which show rapid decomposition due to a lack of antioxidants.
The human body easily digests Chia seeds. The seed's outer layer is rich in mucilloid soluble fibre (Chia possesses 5% soluble fibre) and absorbs more than seven times its weight in water. When mixed with water or stomach juices, the seeds form a gel that creates a physical barrier between the carbohydrates and the digestive enzymes that break them down. The carbohydrates thereby are digested and converted into glucose (blood sugar) at a slow, uniform rate. There is no insulin surge or spike needed to lower the blood sugar level and electrolyte balance. Their water absorption will also help you keep hydrated during sporting activity/physical exercise.

GOOD DIGESTION TIPS
Fruit is an important food, but for the most nutritional and digestive benefit, it’s best to eat all fruit on an empty stomach, not after a meal. If you eat fruit like that, it will help detoxify your system, supplying you with energy. If you eat two slices of bread and then a slice of fruit, the slice of fruit is ready to go straight through the stomach into the intestines, but it is prevented from doing so. In the meantime the whole meal rots and ferments and turns to acid. The minute the fruit comes into contact with the food in the stomach and digestive juices, the entire mass of food begins to spoil.
You may have heard people complaining — every time I eat watermelon I burp, or when I eat a banana I feel like running to the toilet. This will not happen if you eat the fruit on an empty stomach. The fruit mixes with the putrefying other food and produces gas and hence you will bloat!
It is also not true that some fruits, like orange and lemon are more acidic. All fruits become alkaline in our body according to the research of Dr. Herbert Shelton. He says that If you follow the correct way of eating fruit, you have the secret of beauty, longevity, health, energy, happiness and normal weight.
In the same article by Dr Stephen Mak, (and this is also a recommendation in Chinese Medicine), he advises us not drink cold water after you have eaten. The cold water will
solidify the oily stuff that you have just consumed. It will slow down the digestion. Once this 'sludge' reacts with the acid, it will break down and be absorbed by the intestine faster than the solid food. It will line the intestine. Very soon, this will turn into fats and lead to cancer. It is best to drink hot soup or warm water after a meal.
Good digestion is one of the key factors in maintaining optimal health.

MONTY'S SURPRISE THRIVES IN AUCKLAND
wwHE ruit is GOOD DIGESTION When I visited my friend Crea at her place in Point Chevalier in the new year, I was very pleased to see the Monty’s Surprise that she had bought from Koanga Gardens in 2008 doing really well. The tree had grown very quickly and was laden with apples. Even though they are planted on the lawn she has grown comfrey around the base.
The original Monty’s Surprise was found in Wanganui, so it is good to know that this variety will thrive in Auckland and Northland.
